Goal of the competition

The Market of the Old Town in Tarnow has been a vivid center of the city since its location in 1330. From the center of trade to a beloved free time destination both for tourists and the residents of Tarnow, the place is rich in history and architecture. The most remarkable buildings are the town hall, standing in the middle of the square as well as an XVI-century complex of buildings on the north side, housing the local museum. The other tenement houses are mostly from the XIX century and were designed in a rather similar style.

The building which is the topic of that competition stands on the corner of the Market and the Wielkie Schody (Great Stairs) street, which is the main entrance to the square from the south. In 2009 it burned completely, together with a few adjacent buildings on the back. Since then, there were a few attempts to rebuild it made by private investors but today the city council decided to buy the plot and create a multimedia center there. A few months ago, a student competition for the young architects from the Cracow Technical University has been #. Sadly, the results clearly weren’t something that fits well with the delicate historical urban fabric of the place.

With this design competition, we hope to open a debate about what kinds of architecture we want to see in our cities. Also, we want to prove it is still possible to create beautiful designs for such places and hopefully get political traction for more beautiful architecture in Tarnow.

In this design brief…

…you will find the general information about similar projects in the region, created according to the principles of the New Traditional Architecture as well as about the deliverables for this competition.

Similar developemets in the area

There are already a few examples in the Malopolska region, which show more consciousness while designing new buildings in a sensitive, historical environment. The most notably new devlopements in Wieliczka (bus station and new library), as well as new town hall in Muszyna – created on the site where a wooden town hall once stood, however designed with no reference to its predecessor.

This clearly show that it is possible and necessary to create architecture in human scale, which aesthetics corresponds well with its historical surroundings respecting its cubature and style, while at the same time provide with those buildings all contemporary functions and comforts that the user would expect.

Design brief

Design criteria:

- Design an alternative for the Rynek 6 extension

- The design should respect its historical environment as well as the remaining frontal part of the building at Rynek 6. Hence it is not recommended to alter it in any way. A 1 story extension, however, is possible. The part of the building on the side of Wielkie Schody Street, which collapsed nearly completely after the fire, can be redesigned in a free manner, however still with consideration for the architecture of the market square and its surroundings. It can also reach a total of 3 floors.
